Chopin Conference 2012 - Call for papers

The Australian National University invites you to take part in the Chopin Conference held as part of the International Piano Competition and Conference at the ANU School of Music from April 4 – 14, 2013. An integral part of the ten-day event, the Chopin Conference will be held on April 6 and 7 at the ANU School of Music.

Topics and lines of inquiry will include the reception of Chopin’s music in late 19th Century and early 20th Century Australia as well as in the Asian region. Chopin was voted by the ABC CLASSIC piano survey in 2005 as “the most popular composer for piano music,” illustrating the influence of his music felt in many areas of Australian society. Presentations might also look at the broader spectrum of the reception of 19th Century “Romantic” music in Australia.

Another aspect of the Conference will be 19th Century keyboard instruments and the role they play in musical research, highlighted by the 1847 Pleyel piano that will form an integral part of the International Piano Competition. The ANU School of Music has a unique collection of 19th Century instruments, and their place in the performance of 19th Century music in general and on Chopin’s music specifically will be investigated.
