Heath Ledger Young Artists Oral History Project

Inspired by Heath Ledger, whose untimely death left us with little of his oral history, this project aims to record the thoughts and aspirations of audiovisual artists throughout their careers.

Many oral histories are conducted toward the end of an individual’s career but with this project, the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) seeks to expand the oral history program to include interviews with young and emerging artists who we can follow throughout their careers at regular intervals.

Each year each of the collaborating institutions will select a group of graduating students to be participants in the project.  The NFSA will conduct interviews with students in their graduating year to record their expectations and aspirations on both sound and film as they prepare to enter their chosen profession.  These interviews will be followed up at regular intervals of around 5 years to build both a record of their subsequent careers but also to capture the changing nature of their understanding of the professions they have entered, or, on some occasions, possibly left.

This year ANU has selected Simon Thelning and Jack Brandtman as the inaugural candidates.  Simon graduated from the ANU School of Art with a Bachelor of Visual Art, majoring in Digital Media, and Jack also with a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours), in 2011.

Interviews

When they are released, extracts of Simon's and Jack's initial interviews will be available here.
